The cost to maintain a heterozygous colony that requires frequent genotyping ranges from a few thousand to 10's of thousands per year. Even in a scenario with low per diem rates, the cumulative cost of maintaining a colony increases significantly faster than the cumulative cost of cryopreserving a strain, even if a couple recoveries need to be done.

Sperm vs Embryo Cryo: Which is right for me?

The decision to cryopreserve your strain is the first step in protecting it from unforeseen circumstances. How you choose to cryopreserve depends on the unique characteristics of your strain. JAX has successfully refined the embryo cryopreservation technique for more than 30 years to recover mice quickly and reliably. The JAX Sperm Cryopreservation method was developed by our reproductive science experts and has become the industry standard.

Sperm Cryopreservation Details

What you will get:

  • 1 year of storage included in tanks at multiple locations (additional years may be purchased)
  • 20 straws of sperm stored per strain (18-19 when performing quality testing)
  • Quality testing to 2-cell embryos or live mice is available separately
  • The ability to recover your cryopreserved strain 9 to 11 weeks after you place a request
  • Ten or more pups typically recovered from cryopreserved material

Embryo Cryopreservation Details

Standard Approach:

  • Use your own females and males as oocyte and sperm donors
  • Genotype of cryopreserved embryos depends on the genotype of both donors
  • Homozygous genotypes can be preserved, depending on donors

What you will get:

  • 1 year of storage included in tanks at multiple locations (additional years may be purchased)
  • At least 250 two-cell embryos/strain cryopreserved in 10 straws (30 embryos/straw)
  • Internal quality controls to validate the cryopreservation process and address strain-specific difficulties
  • Optional QC: Embryo validity testing via generation of live mice is available separately
